Snow Day!

The midwest got slammed by a blizzard this week, Des Moines was blessed was 16 inches of snow, and today, in the calm after the storm, a temp of -3 degrees fahrenheit!!!! Brrrr! I was jumping for joy yesterday when I received news of my Snow Day…

An unexpected day off work = An unexpected day of sewing!

This photo is one I took on my way into work this morning, it’s alongside my car, a snow drift (not a man-made pile of snow) the black band at the bottom is the dashboard of my VW Beetle.

I sewed all day, never stepped outside, didn’t even get out of my pajamas all day. Now, that’s the definition of a good day, my friends. What did I sew, you ask? I finished the stockings that I bought fabric for LAST December….

They are made with red velvet (the real stuff), white fleece, and various bright Christmas fabrics, all from my stash, and most of them from Michael Miller. The Prairie Points were a fun way to dress them up without detracting from the velvet…

I lined each one with a bright, fun fabric as well…

I made my own stocking pattern, since I dislike the shape of many patterns I see. They need to be wide enough to at least squeeze a book or DVD down in there!

My sweetie thought I should embroider our names on them, but I didn’t want to go that far, so I found these little sterling silver photo frame ornaments and appliqued our initials, the frames hang just in front of the stockings on our hooks and really dress up the mantle!

There was another project I worked on after these, but you’ll have to wait to see pics of that one! Not quite finished yet!

Happy Holidays, a blessed Advent, and safe Winter travels to you and yours! And, to my readers Down Under, I hope you are enjoying your warm temps and spring blossoms!

  1. I agree… too cold, too much snow, time to sew! Your stockings are perfect. Maybe YOU need to be writing a stocking pattern. Love the PP embellishments. They're just right. Good on you, Doris!

  2. What a perfect way to spend a snow day. And you accomplished so much! Ditto to the other comments. Love the points on the elegant stockings. And the initials are a great addition.

Aren't Iowa winters supposed to wait & hit us with their full force in January? This one was way too early!

    Stay warm. Stay safe.

  3. Love the stockings…very classy….and the little ornament frames with the initials just set them off!….Unfortunately we don't get “heat” days…would be nice to have a day home when it is 42C outside!…..the new firebans which have come into force this summer will mean schools in high risk areas are closed….but not offices! ………..what a wonderful way to spend your snow day!

  4. Good night! That worked out well for you! I work with a company in Green Bay, and they were out of commission yesterday. Lines down, offices closed. I thought I was warm here in the South, but it has been getting colder by the hour, and now we are freezing, too, just not as freezing as you…

  5. Wow, your snowy photos are gorgeous. Nice to see such pretty scenes.

I love your new collection of stockings! How nice to have an unexpected free day to make those. I especially love the points, AND the use of the little frames for the monograms.

  6. Hi Doris, I think it was you who tempted fate when you put the “Let it Snow” ornament on your tree. You shouldn't do that in Iowa. LOL

I bought the black & kiwi fat quarter pack from Quilters Cupboard in Ankeny after I saw your sample, but I haven't had time to make it. I'm trying to get my UFO's finished. And that is quite an undertaking.

I like your stockings. They are so cute with the paririe points.

Let me know what you have to say on the subject....
