WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

This week’s WIP post involves organizing my scraps, in preparation for two things:

  1. A Quilt-A-Long I am planning to announce here VERY SOON to start in January 2012 (It will be very UNIQUE and very COOL!)–and will help reduce your pile of scraps…
  2. and making things in bulk at retreat this weekend for my first experience as a Craft Show vendor, NEXT weekend.

Quilters are always curious about how other quilters manage and use their scraps.  So, here’s my recently adopted method for dealing with an overflowing scrap box…

First I sort them by color groups (reds, pinks, oranges/yellows, greens, blues, purples, brown/black/neutrals, and whites/creams).  A few things are sorted by type rather than color; multicolor florals and prints that don’t “fit” into one color group, Halloween, Christmas, Heather Ross scraps.

Then, strips get put aside (by color) for string blocks, strip pieced bags, etc.  Anything bigger than a 2.5″ square gets put in a plastic shoebox by color:

And anything smaller than a 2.5″ square, but too pretty/too cute to toss (I call them itty bits) get stored in their own plastic shoebox to be used for fussy cut hexies, Bee blocks, and truly scrappy projects such as my Scrappy Charm Pincushions.

I never used to have a scrap box, I either tossed smaller items or donated them to a quilt guild that used them for stuffing pillows, etc.  But after meeting and befriending Amanda Jean, and then sewing at a table next to her, I started saving everything.  I even take and use other people’s scraps, now.  I think it’s catchy… so be careful.

So I’m curious, do you save scraps and if so, how do you organize them to make them “useable”?  Or, do you not bother to organize them, just throw them together in one big box or basket?

17) Store Sample-batik jacket

That’s 8 finishes, and only 9 to go! I realize my time is limited, the end of May is fast approaching, but some of those that are crossed off were my biggest hurdles!

Excuse the cruddy-taken-by-myself-in-the-mirror-of-a-windowless-bathroom photo, but this is the jacket I made for a sample for the shop (#17 on my list)…
This is a more true-to-color photo of the batik I used:I finished this completely with french seams… and lots of hand sewing. See that pretty french seam?My Chrysanthemum quilt, #6 on the list, is coming along, I finished the top this weekend, but I can’t cross it off until I quilt and bind it…
I love how it’s turning out!
Hoping to tackle this and #1 on the list yet this week…

On Friday, I’m off to market. Yes, that market.

Making a List, Checking it Twice

I’ve crossed a few biggies off of my Spring to Finish to-do list:

I decided that #16 was the most dreaded of the tasks, the rest are all enjoyable on some level, but #16, only possible to enjoy that task when it is complete. So I dove in, and have my Spring closet cleaning and organizing done, a full two weeks before my sister’s garage sale (where all the “toss” items are going).

Over the weekend, I finished up my last Valentine table runner while watching Anne of Green Gables.

And the biggest accomplishment was finally binding my Girlish Charm Quilt, a generous King-sized mammoth… made with all Amy Butler prints…
The “chains” are all Amy Butler Charm fabrics (hence the name of the quilt), and the fabric between them is from the Amy Butler Midwest Modern 2 line. The binding is bias binding cut from this Pink Lotus Pond by Amy Butler:The back used up the remaining Charm scraps I had, and a lovely soft pink Kona Cotton. It took forever to stitch the binding down just because of it’s size…but I have a great feeling of accomplishment, now that it is done!

Tonight: The Chrysanthemum Quilt!

Motivation

I was in need of some. I was in need of a kick in the pants to get myself moving on some projects already in progress, but not progressing to completion… Enter Jacquie. She’s once again providing the motivation by hosting a Spring to Finish Challenge. You decide on what constitutes a “finish”. You proclaim how many “finishes” you plan to achieve in the next six weeks. You decide what your “reward” will be for completing the challenge.

This is what I am setting out to do, a little ambitious, perhaps, but here it is:

1) Quilt & Bind B&W quilt
2) Quilt and bind dress-form mini quilt
3) Finish Valentine runner
4) Finish six Nearly Insane blocks that are cut
5) Bind Girlish Charm quilt
6) Finish Chrysanthemum quilt
7) Finish Birthday quilt top
8) Bind the Shining Star quilt
9) Finish Flying Geese runner
10) Finish Lisa’s medallion border
11) Finish Studio canvases
12) Finish vintage sewing machine table
13) C’s baby quilt
14) Finish new shower curtain
15) Make 10.5″ 30s Block for Karen
16) Clean out closets 1, 2, and 3 (Ugh. My least favorite item on the list)
17) Store Sample-batik jacket

I haven’t decided how I will reward myself. Maybe a new book. Or two.

The Best of 2009

The Best of 2009, IMHO….

– Favorite Overall Designer: Michael Miller desginer, Sandi Henderson.

– Favorite New Designer: Jessica Levitt (I’ve read her blog forever and I’m so proud of her for her new title of “fabric designer” with her soon to be released Windham Textiles collection, Timber:

– Favorite Floral Print: This lovely Memento Midnight floral from the Amy Butler “Love” line:

– Favorite Holiday Fabric or Collection: Spooktacular! by Sanae for Moda… (why didn’t I buy more?)

– Favorite Reproduction Print or Collection: American Jane and Sandy Klop will always be my fave!

– Wildcard Category: “Fabrics I’m dying to get my hands on!”: Meadowsweet by Sandi Henderson, Nicey Jane by Heather Bailey.

How ’bout you…got any faves from the last year or so? Any can’t live without them fabrics? I had a hard time choosing one for lots of these categories, being as in deep as I am in the fabri-holic category… You can check out others’ list of faves, here

Goals for 2009

Thank you all for your lovely comments on my Winter Wonderland table runner—205 on that post alone! I really like this one and am going to have a difficult time packing it up and sending it away!

I enjoyed reading all of your resolutions–okay, we’re going to call them GOALS, since people don’t seem to like the word resolution anymore–they were entertaining and inspiring all at once! Many of them coincided with mine. Here’s a quick rundown…

Y’all want to get healthier,
be more patient,
listen,
be present in the moment,
be grateful,
exercise more,
push yourself a little further,
organize,
declutter,
put yourself first once in a while,
create more,
pray daily,
have more family quality time,
use up your fabric stash,
buy less new fabric,
hone your machine quilting skills,
your applique skills,
your sewing skills,
teach someone to sew (Love this one!)
finish UFOs,
focus on one project at a time,
pay it forward,
be more financially responsible,

and one of my very favorites (that has been added to my list of goals):

complete one gift per month to get a jump on my handmade holiday. GREAT IDEA!

That’s a pretty impressive list, folks, and what better people we will be for striving for those goals!

So, without further adieu (or babble, as some may see it…) I give you the winner of the Winter Wonderland table runner….drumroolllllllllllllllllll……….

Pat from Silver Thimble Talk! She has the funniest post on December 29th about an exploding bag of dogfood…seriously funny! Congrats, Pat…I hope you love it as much as I do!

For the rest of you, leave a comment with an email if you would like the pattern to make your own. I’d be more than happy to send you a free pattern as a consolation prize. Let’s focus on those goals and have a fabulous 2009!!!!!
